The Rebbe of Vizhnitz who left on Monday night from Israel after midnight for a visit which will last about a month in New York, surprised his chassidim during the flight when he held a Lechaim Tish.
Chassidim who wished to participate in the Rebbe's trip to New York and celebrate the Bar Mitzva of his grandsons, purchased discounted tickets with an interim stop in Russia. The flight was scheduled to leave on Monday morning. The chassidim were sorry when they realized they will miss the lighting of the Rebbe that evening in his Beis Midrash.
But shortly before takeoff, a flaw was discovered in the plane and the passengers were forced to return home. As compensation passengers were allowed to go by direct El Al flight to the U.S., which would leave at midnight that day. The delight of the chassidim was boundless – on this night flight, the Rebbe and his entourage were going.
After the 3rd candle lighting on Monday evening, the Rebbe took off with more than a hundred followers to the United States.
During the flight the Rebbe left the business class to his chassidim, sat in one place, handed out cake and held a Lechaim Tisch for Hanukkah.
During the Tish the chassidim sang Chanukah songs and songs of joy, while joined by other passengers. A few hours later the Rebbe came back to his disciples and asked how the flight is going and was interested in the safety of passengers.
A month's journey
Chassidim who joined the Rebbe's flight pledged permanent provisions for the 'Perpetual Fund' for the institutions.
The Rebbe took off to the U.S. to participate in the Simcha of his grandsons' Bar Mitzvah, Shlomo Zalman and Chaim Meir – the twin sons of his son-in- law Harav Yoel Moshe Mordechai Katz - son of the Rebbe of Vienne. This is the first trip of the Rebbe to the U.S., since he came to the throne leadership.
After the landing in New York, the Rebbe came to visit his uncle the Rebbe of Vizhnitz-Monsey, and to visit his brothers-in-law, the Satmer Rebbe and Square Rebbe.
Besides the Simcha of Bar Mitzvah, the Rebbe is expected to spend Shabos Chanukah at his Beis Midrash in Boro Park, where the Tefillos and Tishes will be conducted.
On Sunday, Zos Chanukah, the Rebbe will participate in the dedication of the Midrash, Yeshuos Moshe in Monsey, which will be incorporated in the Tisch for Zos Chanukah.
The journey is scheduled to take about a month, and on the evening following the fast of Asara Be'Teves the 'Dinner Hamalchus' for his institutions will take place. The Rebbe is expected to return to his residence in Bnei Brak on the weekend of Parshas Shmos.
