Tragedy in Manchester: Killed on his birthday on his way to Maariv

A fatal road accident stunned the ultra-Orthodox community in Manchester, England yesterday: On Motzei Shabbos a member of the community, Rabbi Chaim Steinberg z"l whose 83rd birthday fell on that day, stepped out to the Ohel Torah synagogue on Leicester road, to daven Maariv on Motzei Shabbos.
Eyewitnesses said that Rabbi Chaim crossed the road on a crosswalk when the speeding car came - and hit R' Chaim.
The vehicle fled from the scene, leaving the victim unconscious and bleeding.
Rescuers arrived at the scene and tried to perform CPR, but unfortunately they could only pronounce his death.
ZAKA volunteers were called to the scene to prevent degradation of the dead.
Police who were called arrested the driver, a young man of 22.
The funeral of Rabbi Chaim Steinberg z" was held today in Manchester.
