The Sunday Times Newspaper reports this morning from sources in Israel, that Israel's Special Forces have been operating throughout Syria, to find chemical and biological stockpiles of Assad's regime.
"For years we knew the exact location of these stockpiles," the newspaper quoted an Israeli source. "But last week we got hints that buffers were driven to other locations."
According to a report in The Sunday Times, the possibility of wide-scale ground invasion was considered, but decided that was too risky. Air strike arsenals were also considered, but rejected for fear of the damage that can be caused to people and the environment due to emission of chemicals.
Last week it was reported that the U.S. and its allies, including Israel, are prepared for a ground invasion in the case of use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime, while simultaneously increasing military efforts to bring to the dismissal of Assad.
According to diplomatic sources, the shipment of weapons, including mortars, anti-tank missiles and rpg rockets, will be sent to Syrian rebels through friendly countries in the Middle East. In this case, Special Forces will be stationed in Syria combined with 75 thousand battalion soldiers to take over the facilities where Syria's chemical weapons are located.
Earlier this year, President Barack Obama authorized covert support for the rebels by the CIA, and Syrian territory already has special American forces operating as well as the British. The American decision came following reports of transferring of Syria's chemical weapons.
This weekend, U.S. Defense Secretary said that the United States received information that raises "serious concerns" that Syrian President Bashar Assad is considering use of chemical weapons against the rebels in his country.
In 2007, a Sapphire military facility was damaged south east of the city of Aleppo (Halab)– of an explosion, while Syrian and Iranian engineers assembled warheads with the nerve gas scud missile. The explosion caused a leak of gas, and also reportedly killed 15 Syrians and 11 Iranians.
