U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle issued a statement on Shabbos in honor of Chanukkah.
"This Chanukkah season we remember the powerful story of the Maccabees, who rose to free their people from oppression. Upon hearing of the desecration of the Temple, believers found enough oil to light the menorah for one night and it lit for eight nights," reads the letter he published.
"We wish you our warmest wishes to those celebrating Chanukkah around the world."
The U.S. president stressed that "Chanukkah is a time to celebrate the faith and traditions of the Jewish people, but it's also an opportunity for all religions to recognize the common aspirations we share.
"This holiday season allows us to acknowledge the blessings we enjoy, and be aware of those who are suffering. Let's renew our commitment to build a better and more perfect world for all of us."
After the blessing, he wrote: "From our family to every Jewish community around the world - happy holiday."
