A storm in Sweden: Holocaust survivors argue that a local artist abased Holocaust victims and used the ashes taken from Majdanek extermination camp for his works.
According to local media reports, the artist Karl Michael Hoswolf mixed the ashes from the Majdanek kilns with water to paint gray stripes in his paintaing.
The ash was taken from the extermination camp during his visit to the site.
His new work is presented in the gallery in Sweden.
This act sparked anger and outrage among Jews in Sweden.
Shlomo Shulman, a member of the Jewish community, who lost many relatives in the Holocaust, described the figure in an article he published, "Disgusting. Who knows," he added, "some of the ashes might have belonged to my relatives. Nobody knows where they were expelled. I would never go to this gallery. I'm shocked at his art work and the obsession with necrophilia."
Hoswolf in his turn claimed that the ashes "contain the memories and souls of people who were tortured and murdered."
