Bomb squad unit from the Lachish Region neutralized with complex activity a Grad rocket collected at the home of a resident of Ashkelon, after it carried active and dangerous explosives weighing a few pounds. The man also allowed his young children to play with the rocket.
On Friday night, during a neighborhood football game, a sapper from the Lachish region heard that a player in the group took home a "souvenir" from 'pillar of defense'. A short interrogation about the item raised the suspicion that it's more than just a minor part of the rocket.
The Lachish region bomb squad immediately sent a sapper to the collector's home, which revealed that the warhead of a Grad rocket contains explosives and active mechanisms.
After a professional assessment it was decided that the item will be handled the next day in daylight. On Shabbos, early morning the Lachish region bomb squad arrived at the house, where they took care of the item and it was taken to an isolated place for neutralization.
Commander of the bomb squad would like to reiterate: "In this case a great miracle occurred. The item taken was without professional treatment and could have ended in disaster. The man who took the item endangering not only himself but also the young children who played with it, his neighbors and the police squads who were forced to make a more complicated treatment due to the location of the item. Israeli police are prepared for every call and will handle every fall that is found. We urge the public not to touch unexploded ordnance, or parts of rockets and immediately call the police. Even at this point, civil obedience saves lives."
