Itzik Elrov, who initiated and led the 'cottage protest', uploaded a disturbing image last weekend which caused a sensation on the social network and dragged many comments from surfers.

The picture shows a haredi woman, hours before Shabbos, picking up tomatoes on Rabbi Akiva Street in Bnei Brak.

"Whilst shopping for Shabbos", Elrov wrote on his personal page, "It was hard not to notice these scenes too. These people are everywhere, but most of us prefer to look away and move on. What about the crate? The tomatoes in it were badly decomposed ..."

Some surfers were not surprised by what the picture reflected. "In every city and every market you will meet them towards the end of the day when traders want to get rid of what was left and close the stand," wrote one of the surfers.

Another surfer wrote: "The poverty report is more real than real! To see the sights you have to want to see them, and not on the road from a prestigious neighborhood to a luxury central area and back. I see these scenes and what I see is just a little. My heart breaks."

A poverty report released last week shows that the poverty rate has risen from 19.8% in 2010 to 19.9% in 2011. In 2011 there were 442,200 poor families - including 1.838,600 million persons, of which 860,900 are children.
