"Adjustments were made on issues relating to the Haredi recruitment process," the IDF spokesman said tonight (Thursday) in response to B'Chadrei Charedim, bringing an end to the storm that occurred the previous day.
The problem arose after learning that yeshiva students who arrived at conscription centers - after receiving the first order - had to deal with issues of modesty, among other things, some of them being checked by a female doctor.
Consequently, HaGaon Auerbach published, contrary to the orders of the Council of Torah Sages, which say not to appear at all the bureaus. In response, Yated Ne'eman published in the paper this morning another order by the council, given immediately after the expiry of the Tal Law, in August.
In the afternoon a few Torah figures affiliated with the Jerusalem branch, came to the home of Hagr"sh in Jerusalem, amongst the participants were Hgrb"hs Deutsch, Yeshivat Kol Torah, and Hagaon Ades, a leader of Yeshiva Kol Yaakov. At the end of the meeting, a decision was not made, because according to some participants, after adjustments were made by the IDF for the Haredi population - problems relate only to some of the Yeshivas.
Yesterday (Wednesday) public representatives met with army representatives to clarify the matter and to find solutions.
B'Chadrei Charedim heard that the IDF agreed to change part of the process when it comes to haredi boys. For example, interviews with orthodox boys will be adjusted; carried out by men only, the questions will be adapted to the Orthodox lifestyle. In addition, emphasis will be placed on the fact that yeshiva students appear in groups at the various recruiting offices and will be handled in an organized and coordinated way, and by male doctors only. The army made it clear that any candidate for security service can choose the gender of the examining physician.
In a formal response from the IDF transferred to B'Chadrei Charedim it was said: "At a meeting yesterday between representatives of the IDF and Knesset members, issues relating to the Haredi recruitment process to the IDF were agreed upon. Amongst the agreements - personal interviews for the orthodox by men only, and editing questions matching the lifestyle of the ultra-Orthodox society. As for the issue of the examining physician, it should be noted that each candidate for security service is given the right to choose the gender of the examining physician."
