Jewish slaughtering banned in Poland

Constitutional Court of Poland decided last night to ban the Jewish and Muslim slaughter in the country.

Polish Constitution prohibits the slaughter of conscious animals, but until now the Polish Ministry of Agriculture exempted the Jewish and Muslim slaughter outside this prohibition.

But following a request by the animal rights organizations in the country, the Warsaw-based Constitutional Court ordered that the existence of the Jewish slaughter in the given legal situation, is not possible any longer.

The Jewish community in Poland, which totals 6,000 Jews, protested the decision. According to them, the decision is contrary to the EU Constitution which requires freedom of religion.

Eighteen months ago, the lower house approved a bill in the Dutch parliament prohibiting slaughter of animals.

Jews and Muslims in the country cooperated in the fight and the Dutch law fell.
