The war on the nature of Jerusalem between the ultra-Orthodox and religious and secular continues:
The Givat Mishveah neighborhood of Jerusalem is the only neighborhood in the city with no Mikveh and no plan to build soon, even though a quarter of the residents of the neighborhood - hundreds of families - are interested in having a mikveh, and previously signed a petition demanding one.
4 years ago more than 400 women in the neighborhood asked to build a Mikveh. Municipal public officials, including Deputy Mayor of Mifdal, David Hadari, made great efforts to bring about the allocation of space and budget for construction.
Community Administration of Kiryat Menachem, who is in charge of the neighborhood in question, prevented the construction of the mikveh. Administration officials have argued that there is a Mikveh in Kiryat Menahem, however the walking distance is a quarter of an hour, and it exceeds the standard volume of users.
Yesterday (Monday) the Allowance Committee in the Jerusalem Municipality discussed the prize grant provided to the three outstanding community administrations, including the administration of the Kiryat Menachem neighborhood. In explanation to the prize it stated that it is given for excellence in the service to the residents.
"I was amazed!" Wrote David Hadari on the social network in his possession in response to the prize. "Does a war against a religious community win a prize? Is preventing a Mikveh to hundreds of families a service to the citizen?" At the last moment, Hadari managed to pass a resolution to cancel the award and the denial of financial support for community administration that fought the construction of the Mikveh.
