An indictment against an Israeli resident who spied for Hezbollah

In a joint operation by ISA and Israel Police - Jerusalem District, Essam Hashim Ali Mahahareh, a resident of Israel who lives in Jerusalem was arrested a month ago, after he was recruited to Hezbollah during a visit to Lebanon in June 2012.

Mahahareh, 37, a resident of the village Jabel Makwar in southern Jerusalem, and an 'Egged' bus driver by profession, admitted to the ISA - among other things – his recruitment to Hezbollah, and providing information on numerous sites, including government sites, such as the Knesset and Government Campus and public sites, including the Hebrew University, Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital and Mount Scopus hospital.

Mahahareh's investigation also revealed that Hezbollah officials instructed him to return to Israel, and to maintain contact with the organization through the Internet.

Recruitment of Mahahareh to the Hezbollah is another example of the organization's efforts to recruit Israeli agents, or residents with Israeli identity cards (blue) for spying and terrorist activities against Israel. This is despite the morals the organization attributes to the accessibilities of the individuals and sites throughout Israel - unlike Palestinians from the West Bank.

This case joins other cases exposed in recent months, reflecting the Hezbollah's efforts in this area. Recalling: Hezbollah used the network of drug dealers in Israel for insertion of 20 kilograms of explosives and operating systems (July 2012), and the arrest of Milad Khatib, a resident of Majdal Al Krum, who provided information to Hezbollah, and was recently indicted severely (September 2012).

An indictment was presented today (Sunday) against Mahahareh in the District Court of Jerusalem, who's offenses are attributed to contact with a foreign agent, giving information to the enemy, conspiracy to deliver information to the enemy and exit to an enemy country without permission. In addition a request was submitted to detain him until the end of the proceedings.
