Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee approved today at a second and third reading a law that seeks to extend the presidency of Chief Rabbis of Israel, for an extra three months.

Chief Rabbinate of Israel Law states that the term of office of the chief rabbis will be ten years. Serving chief rabbis, Rabbi Shlomo Amar and Rabbi Yona Metzger, elected to their positions in Nissan תשס"ג - April 2003, and their terms will end in the month of Nissan of this year.

But since the Knesset decided that the 19th general election will be held in Shevat תשע"ג - January 2013, and according to the law of the Chief Rabbinate, seven of the 150 electoral body members are five members of the Knesset elected by the Knesset and two Ministers elected by the government, and in order not to build the Electoral Assembly on the eve of elections, the government sought to extend the tenure of the current rabbis for an extra three months.

As noted, the committee approved the law as a temporary measure. The Knesset is expected to approve the final reading for the law, before the election.
