Michael Appelbaum, a Jew who served as a member of the Montreal City Council, was appointed at the end of this week as the Mayor of Montreal.
Appelbaum was elected by the votes of the City Council, after the former mayor - Gerald Timberli - was forced to resign a year before the end of his term, due to corruption.
Appelbaum is also the first English-speaking mayor in more than a hundred years, serving as mayor of the French-speaking Montreal.
However, Appelbaum said that he will only serve as mayor until the end of the term - for one year only, but not beyond that.
The Jewish community in Montreal, one of the largest denominations in the city, received the appointment of Appelbaum as mayor with satisfaction.
Appelbaum has excellent relationships with lobbyists of the ultra-Orthodox communities in Montreal.
It was previously reported on the various laws enacted by the City Council of Montreal, which made it difficult to keep to a religious way of life.
For example, the interceding community had to work hard to turn a blind eye to the inspectors in the municipality due to building of Sukkos.
Now the Jewish community hopes that the Jewish mayor will do a few good things for the Jewish community.
