Jerusalem Magistrate's Court extended today by five days the arrest of two suspects on fraud from the Ministry of Education, through a fictitious organization called Bnos Yerushalayim-Keren Moshe.
The arrest of the two suspects was extended until Thursday. A third suspect has been released last week under restrictive conditions, after claiming that he had no involvement in the fraud itself, other than cashing checks for the other suspects.
Judge Dov Pollack said that the court sees fit to extend the detention of suspects at this stage of the investigation, since there is cause for detention and the police have yet to complete their investigation, but said that on Thursday the court would consider an alternative to detention, since the investigation may last a long time.
Undercover investigation began a year ago at the Fraud Squad, following information on obtaining money by deception, during which investigators traced the footsteps of three members of the association. Extent of the fraud, it is believed, is estimated at tens of millions of shekels in recent years.
The organization was established several years ago - by the main suspect, he allegedly asked for the support of the Ministry of Education for an anti - Zionist educational institution called 'Bnos Yerushalayim' - which never asked for government support.
Suspects also mentioned names of fictitious additional students who are not learning at Bnos Yerushalayim, and asked for support.
