Did Sandy erase the Ketubah? Call the Red Line

Two weeks have passed since the storm 'Sandy'hit the east coast of the United States, causing serious long term damage. The storm did not pass over the cities and ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, and along with damage to life and property, it has brought up complicated halachic questions that Morei Horoah were required to determine.

One of the difficult issues placed on the desks of Morei Horoah addresses the issue of Ketubah's which were destroyed, erased or damaged by water.

The questions were brought up to the authorities in the neighborhoods of Flatbush, Five Towns, Seagate, Far Rockaway, and Lakewood, Monsey, Monroe and more.

Rabbi Benjamin Frost, a Moreh Horoah in Far Rockaway and Five Towns, decided due to the many cases to establish a 'Red Line', which the public can call and ask questions, since a man cannot live with his wife, without a correctly written Ketubah.

"In many cases, the Ketubah remained," he said to B'Chadrei Charedim, "but parts of it have been blurred or erased from the water which flooded the houses. In other cases the Ketubah was destroyed and completely washed away. In homes where fires occurred – the Ketubah was burned."

Rabbi Frost says that the red line whose number is 516-239-2500 was founded just two days ago, and since then has not stopped ringing. "Whoever needs a new Ketubah, will receive it instantly," promises Rabbi Frost and adds: "the red line is being occupied by Rabbanim from all sectors – Chassidim, Lithuanian and Sephardic."
