Who is Ahmed Shaid Khalil Jabari, whose assassination may ignite a war?
Jabari served as Hamas Chief of Staff, and in recent years he commanded the organization military wing that controls the Gaza Strip in a series of events that shaped the reality in Gaza, including among other things - the Hamas takeover in 2007, and involvement in management rounds of escalation with Israel.
Jabari promoted the bomb attack carried out in June 2006, in which IDF soldiers were killed and Gilad Schalit kidnapped. Following the abduction and during plea negotiations to promote the release of Gilad Schalit from Hamas captivity, he was the Hamas's chief negotiator and represented an extreme and delegate mark against the deal. During the transaction he was revealed publicly after accompanying Gilad Schalit to the Egyptian border.
Jabari, aged 52, a resident of Gaza, was involved in military operations since the early 80's and served until his assassination as Hamas senior military commander. In the past he was a close associate of Sheikh Yassin - the founder of Hamas, who was also assassinated - and acted, under his patronage.
Jabari began his military operations as a Fatah activist, and participated in several attacks against Israeli targets. For this background, he was imprisoned in Israel for 13 years - from 1982 until January 1995, when he was released after serving his sentence.
During his stay in prison, he radicalized his positions, joined Hamas and served as a representative of Hamas and Islamic Jihad prisoners. The many years he served in prison, his extremist views and activities in prison gave Jabari upon his release, the senior Hamas leadership.
Since his release, he was involved in a variety of senior roles in Hamas. He served both as a senior military commander whilst directing terror squads throughout Gaza and the West Bank, and is involved in smuggling weapons into the field, and in the organizational capacities of the movement.
In the periods when he was one of the elite military wings, he was involved in promoting and issuing a series of terror attacks.
Since 1995 he began the association to support Hamas prisoners and actually managed to date the 'Association of Discharged Prisoners' of Hamas, under the patronage of Sheikh Yassin. In this framework he led a vast array of funds transfers to finance Hamas prisoners and their families and to support the families of terrorists who were killed.
