Yaakov Ostreicher, the orthodox businessman jailed in Bolivia, was hospitalized last week at the Santa Cruz local hospital, , after his condition deteriorated.
Medical tests revealed that he is suffering from the first symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
"My grandchildren in the United States are asking where I am, and my wife had to tell them I work in Bolivia, they wonder:" Is work more important than them." He recalled painfully to a local media interview.
Ostreicher, an orthodox businessman, has been imprisoned for 17 months in Palmasola, one of the country's most notorious prisons on suspicion of money laundering and drug connections. Although he believes he is innocent, Ostreicher won't get fair trial from the judicial system dominated by dubious elements in the country.
Last week, Ostreicher was transferred to the hospital after feeling unwell. Following medical tests doctors discovered that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease, a degenerative disease of the nervous system, which advances slowly. Meanwhile, with the help of his attorney, he received confirmation that he is hospitalized for a week, and then his medical condition will be evaluated further.
Recently Sean Penn, an American Jewish actor and film director visited Ostreicher. Penn has a great impact on the law enforcement in Bolivia, but despite this, local media reported that it is unclear to what extent the actor's efforts are ongoing in the legal case against Ostreicher.
In an interview Ostreicher gave to El Deber, the local media, he said: "I would like to say that I believe in justice, but unfortunately I do not. Judiciary is controlled by corrupt people. I have 11 grandchildren, two of whom I have never seen."
