The Haredi gemachim list is getting longer by the day, but on the gemach that you read in these lines, you have not yet heard of: A gemach to lengthen skirts - for free.
This is an initiative born a year ago and has gathered momentum in recent months.
An Orthodox woman who serves as a seminary teacher in a well recognized institution contracted cancer, recovered from the disease - and as a thank you sign initiated a creative idea which will reward, in her opinion, the daughters of Israel, and their modesty by lengthening skirts.
The woman published ads in the Haredi press for voluntary seamstresses from all over the country, for people willing to extend skirts - for free.
The gemach so far has 100 volunteers. 40 of who live in Bnei Brak and its purpose: "that girls should dress modestly."
And how does it work?
Women who want to extend the skirt turn to the gemach initiator by phone and she gives them a list of addresses and phone numbers of volunteer seamstresses, living in their region.
The seamstresses can extend the skirt by buying fabric that matches the material of the skirt or alternatively by opening the hem.
"All for the reward of daughters of Israel," says the initiator.
