"This is no longer bearable," say the worshipers in Hebron, after bad weather caused an overflow of the Cave of the Patriarchs to a height of 30 cm, which prevented them, and visitors to enter the place.
The flooding, in the 'yard' of the cave, is the result of lack of flow gutters and walls, a problem that repeats itself every year.
For several years the heads of directorate of Mearat HaMachpelah have been trying to lead the complete sealing of the shed above the yard hall. Orderly plans for roofing the hall have been submitted multiple times to the Civil Administration, but these programs have not passed the bureaucratic ranks. In addition, to solve the problem of the gutters, the directorate of the Cave is dependant on the Waqf's decision – who is refusing for now to address the problem.
The head of the religious council of Kiryat Arba in Hebron, who is responsible for handling the Cave of the Patriarchs, Yossi Dayan, says: "It is impossible that one of the most sacred places for the Jewish people will stumble upon this shameful situation. This is a humiliating situation which is unthinkable. I call on the authorities to intervene and arrange the issue."
