An anti-tank missile shot tonight (Shabbos) at an IDF force which was on routine patrol near the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip. As a result of the gunfire four soldiers were injured.
Two injured were evacuated by helicopter to Soroka Hospital, one in very serious condition and the other in fair condition. Two other soldiers - in mild to moderate condition - were evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon.
In response, the IDF returned fire and attacked ground targets in the Gaza Strip area. The army informed: "The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens and security forces, and will continue to operate against anyone who activates terror against Israel. The Hamas terrorist organization is the address, and is responsible. "
Palestinian sources reported that the missile was fired at a jeep which moved on the border fence east of the Zeitun neighborhood of Gaza City. The jeep caught on fire. According to Palestinians, in response to rocket fire, the IDF attacked the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza, where - according to reports - one person was killed and 10 were injured.
A little later the Palestinians reported another attack - this time in Sajaiya neighborhood in Gaza. Palestinians report three dead and 30 wounded. Palestinian sources reported another attack by the IDF at a vehicle moving near Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip.
It is estimated that the shooting was a result IDF forces entered the area west of the fence on Thursday in order to reveal vegetation and locate explosive devices.
Last Thursday a bomb tunnel exploded during a routine patrol of IDF forces in southern Gaza to detect explosives. The initiated activity was brought about by an increase in the number of terrorist incidents in the southern Gaza Strip over the last two weeks. An engineering workforce operating in the area identified a number of explosive devices. Upon completion of operations, during actions to rectify the fence, there was an explosion of a bomb tunnel under the Hobers axis. It was a very large explosion, revealing a tunnel at a depth of four meters and a width of four meters. An empty IDF vehicle which was at a distance, was blown away by the force of the explosion and was damaged.
Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, the military wing of the PFLP in Gaza, claimed responsibility for firing anti-tank missile at an IDF jeep. Hamas officials claim that the IDF violated the status quo that cross the 300-meter fence which is defined as a "security parameter" and entered the Palestinian security control zone. The IDF insisted that the activity was within the area permitted for action.
Yahya Moussa, Hamas MP in Gaza, said: "The Palestinian resistance has become stronger than ever and that it can protect the residents and stop any aggression. The Opposition's hand can completely protect the Palestinian people and respond to Israeli crimes."
During the last two weeks many explosives were used against IDF forces along the Gaza Strip border fence, when one of them injured the company commander, Capt. Ziv Shilon.
According to the instructions of the Home Front Command, residents of the Otef Aza area in Eshkol are asked to stay within 15 seconds of protected space. Two mortar shells landed this evening in open areas.
