Puerto Rico residents voted yesterday (Tuesday), for the first time to join the United States as a federal state.
If Congress approves the decision, Puerto Rico will be the 51st state in the United States.
The island is an autonomous territory of the United States, and residents are U.S. citizens but cannot vote in elections.
Referendum offered three options: 5% voted for total independence, 33% chose a sovereign state, to win greater autonomy than it has today, and the majority - 61%, voted in favor of joining the United States.
"We want the full rights granted to all U.S. citizens," said Thomas Rivera Schatz, president of the local parliament. "
At the same time, referendum elections were held for congress and appointed governor of the island.
The current governor was defeated in elections, Lois Foartono by Alejandro Garcia Padilla, head of the Popular Democratic Party.
