Following another storm forecast, volunteers joined today (Tuesday) to assist the residents of Far Rockaway in New York which was severely damaged by storm Sandy.
Forecasters warn of another storm of snow and cold which is coming to New York tomorrow. Due to warnings, efforts have grown stronger to help neighborhoods hit hard from Sandy and in particular the neighborhood of Far Rockaway.
Many volunteers joined groups sent by the Satmar Rebbe to the neighborhood last Thursday.
At the head of the volunteer organizations is the "Matzilei Aish" organization from Kiryat Yoel, and 'Shomrim' organizations from Williamsburg, Borough Park and Far Rockaway.
These organizations brought hot meals from the Satmar butcher shop in Williamsburg and set up five fundraising points in Williamsburg and Borough Park.
Due to the intense cold that prevails in New York donations of warm clothing and blankets for children are requested.
In the hall above the neighborhood shul, a special kitchen is powered and a clothing distribution point.
In the evening hours the activists split up. Some kept an eye on the streets from looters; others moved from house to house and pumped the water from the houses, and others scattered flash lights on the main streets to illuminate the darkness.
Their assistance made newspaper headlines and a common joke in the neighborhood states that Far Rockaway has won the support of international organizations: 'Shomrim Williamsburg', 'Matzilei Aish' from Kiryat Yoel and 'Chaveirim'.
