An ELAL plane, Flight 007 Boeing 747-400 aircraft taking off today (Monday) from the airport to New York, carrying on board 320 passengers and crew, was forced to land in Ireland, due to the smell of burning which spread on the plane. "The smell probably came from one of the engines on the plane," said an official and estimated that "the danger for the passengers was real."
Following the smell of burning, the captain decided to land the plane at the airport, Shannon, Ireland, after a six-hour flight. According to El Al the plane made a normal landing, and passengers were transferred to rest at hotels in the city.
Meanwhile, tonight at 20:00 another plane was sent from Ben Gurion Airport to pick up passengers and fly them to New York. According to the plan, the plane should take off after two in the morning from Shannon, Ireland to New York.
B'Chadrei Charedim learned that amongst the passengers are Chabad emissaries living in Israel who went to New York to attend a conference of shluchim which will open in Crown Heights - Brooklyn on Wednesday.
Also the Daatscher Rebbe, who lives in Bnei Brak went to New York on the flight which was delayed. Tomorrow the wedding of his grandson will be held, son of his son in law who is the Daatscher Rebbe of Borough Park. The flight delay will result in the Rebbe being unable to rest before the wedding.
The unplanned landing in Ireland created a chain reaction of delayed flights that were supposed to take off the next day to New York. For example, Flight 001 was delayed by ELAL which was supposed to take off at 1:00 am, and tomorrow morning at 7:30.
Also many from Chabad, most of who were supposed to fly starting from Tuesday morning for the convention, will take off late, due to delays created by the faulty plane landing in Ireland.
