On Friday night at 22:50, a report was received that a fire broke out in an apartment on Chatam Sofer Street in Beitar Illit. The rescue center in the city called the Hatzalah volunteers, MDA and firefighters.
The teams rescued about 20 residents - most of them wounded – from the two burning apartments. MDA teams evacuated to the hospital a woman of about 60 in moderate condition, and 14 slightly injured including 7 children and 7 adults. The injured patients were evacuated to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital and Shaarei Tzedek in Jerusalem.
Guy Akrib, head of the rescue center, said on Motzei Shabbos to B'Chadrei Charedim that due to the outbreak of the fire they cut off power and gas system of four buildings, and now he is working with the companies to connect systems quickly.
The apartments were slightly damaged.
An initial investigation found that the fire broke out as a result of Shabbos candles placed near the curtain that caused the spread of fire.
Chaim Har Zahav, a Hatzalah paramedic in Beitar said: "The fire damaged several apartments and without quick activity by all Hatzalah paramedics in Beitar it could have ended in catastrophe. We broke into the apartments together with the firefighters and helped the occupants to leave the apartments which were filled with smoke; we provided primary health care to 15 casualties who were evacuated to the hospitals.
