Elad Municipality presents: Police stopped construction of synagogue

Unbelievable: Orthodox municipality blocks Orthodox synagogue construction.

Elad municipality, headed by the mayor, Yitzchal Eidan, turned last Wednesday to the Magistrate's Court in Petach Tikva, with a request to stop construction work for building a synagogue. Earlier this week, police arrived to stop the construction.

In June this year the planning and building committee in Elad met to discuss the request for the association 'Shirat Naftali', to add a structure to a synagogue over two kindergarten classes on 8 Rabbi Chiya Street in the city.

Following a brief discussion attended by the committee chairman and Mayor Yitzhak Eidan, among others such as, Deputy Mayor Zelig Orlansky and Legal Advisor of the committee, Attorney Nissim Levy – the members unanimously approved the construction plans of the organization.

For some reason, depending on who you ask, the hearing protocol, as well as the decision was not signed by the municipality.

The organization began construction immediately after the committee approved construction at the synagogue. But two months later they received an administrative order ordering the cessation of the work from the municipality. "In a city like Elad, as much as we sound like a broken record, we have no one to turn to," says Yerucham Turner, caretaker of the synagogue, in a conversation with B'Chadrei Charedim.

"Even if we put the legal considerations aside and ignore the unnecessary debate, there is no logical reason that comes to mind how an Orthodox municipality which gives permission for the construction of the synagogue, does not sign the committee protocol and two months later, issues an order to stop construction."

The association did not believe this week when police officers were called by the municipality, to prevent the construction.

An investigation conducted by B'Chadrei Charedim shows that last week Attorney Nissim Levy filed a request for an order to stop construction. "Respondents (association YA) have no permits for construction," he wrote on the grounds of the request.

"For more than a year there is no engineer in the city of Elad. Approvals and permits were given in the same form as were given to us. A new engineer comes to the city and all he had to do, was to prevent the construction of the synagogue, even in Arab countries, we have not heard of such conduct against the Jews," said the association of the synagogue.

Despite numerous attempts, we were unable to receive a response from the Elad municipality.
