Day of the death of Rachel Imeinu, a day when thousands visit the tomb in Bethlehem, raises amazement around the "red thread" Many people use it against the evil eye. Is there anything behind these threads? Is there any reasoning behind it after its wound seven times around the grave?
Many previously dealt with this question. One of the major U.S. newspapers devoted a 6-page article for the issue.
In the section "ask the rabbi" on the 'yeshiva' website recently, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, the rabbi of Safed and the son of Reb Moshe Eliyahu zt"l was asked about the custom red threads sold as a virtue by different vendors at the grave site, and other holy places.
Rabbi Eliyahu said that "one should be careful not to get caught up in these threads too much."
The original idea which lies in taking thread is feeling connection to the Tzaddik and place. "A person who takes the string and ties it and it reminds him of the Tzaddik. However, whoever thinks that this causes a spell or has any mystical interest which helps him - it has no benefit," says Rabbi Eliyahu.
