U.S. in panic: hurricane Sandy on the way to East Coast • No transport or flights

Panic on the east coast of the United - States: Tonight (Sunday) Hurricane 'Sandy' could reach and strike highly populated areas, including the entire area of New York.

The subway closes tonight at 19:00 pm already, and other public transportation at 21:00 pm. In addition, all bridges in New York will be closed to traffic tomorrow.

Airline passengers who were supposed to fly tomorrow and the day after were asked to delay their flights for Wednesday, free of charge. More than 3,000 flights were canceled in various airports, and El Al Israel Airlines announced the cancellation of flights leaving for New York. Subsequently the planned visit of the Rebbe of Vizhnitz to New York - which was supposed to take off tonight – was postponed at least until Tuesday.

Forecasters have already announced that this is one of the worst hurricanes the United States has known, and the entire America was seized by panic towards the storm – expected tonight or early Monday morning.

On its way to the east coast of the United States, Hurricane Sandy killed at least 66 people in the Caribbean Islands, including 51 in Haiti. Most of the casualties were killed by floods or mudslides.

The hurricane is moving at a speed of 120 kmph, and it may strike first in New York, New Jersey and the surrounding area - including the Hareidi neighborhoods of Monsey, New Square, Kiryat Yoel in Monroe, Boro Park, Sea Gate, Flatbush in Brooklyn, and Lakewood.

"The size of this storm alone, which will affect a very populated area, is going to be of historical measure," said Jeff Masters, hurricane expert. What will add to the power of the hurricane, is a storm coming from the other side of New York, when the two storms are expected to meet in the region.

The local 'Haverim' Organization's telephone switchboard has collapsed. "Stop calling", the organization asks, "We are here for emergencies only, but follow the instructions of local authorities, don't rely on us. Don't ask us for generators in preparation for emergencies, we will provide generators only for emergencies in real time," added the organization, noting: " Our generators are designed for patients and elderly who use electricity for their existence. In general, don't try to be clever - you are asked to stay home, so don't try to go out – you'll get stuck. "

Talmudei Torah and schools have already announced that on Monday there will be no classes. Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, has announced that public schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

In Haredi neighborhoods throughout the city products like food, flashlights and batteries were snatched. The NPGS store in Boro Park got almost completely empty of products. The same situation in the Super 13 on 13th Avenue in Boro Park, and Mega 53 - and this is the case at many supermarkets in haredi concentrations, as well as parts of New Jersey and New York as a whole.

The Mayor of New York also ordered to evacuate 375 thousand people living near the coast, including residents of the Hareidi Sea Gate suburb. According to the order issued, the residents of these areas may not remain in their homes and they had to leave, mainly because the water level in the sea and also because of the fall of leaves in autumn which clog the drainage system and cause major flooding.

According to forecasts, the storm will reach peak power especially at night between Monday and Tuesday, with the main impact being in New Jersey. The city of Lakewood, for example, is supposed to absorb 10 inches of rain at night, and the winds will be at 70 miles per hour. New York City, located 50 miles from the Hurricane center will absorb less rain, but the winds will be 90 miles per hour – something which has never occurred in New York.

In Monsey, located in a low place and with many rivers, there will be many floods, as well as power outages. Winds are about 75 mph. As recalled, Hurricane Irene, about a year ago, killed two Jews from electrical shock, after electricity poles collapsed.

Kiryat Yoel and the Catskills the storm is expected to be much easier than Hurricane Irene. According to the forecast, not a lot of rain will fall and the winds will be no more than 60 miles
