Benjamin Netanyahu is worried. Or so say Channel 10. The concern, according to the channel reporters, is due to polls predicting a decline in the power of the party by the union and the common run with Israel Beiteinu.
A survey conducted for Channel 10, the by the 'Sample Project' company, under the supervision of Prof. Kamil Fuchs, shows there is widespread opposition among Likud voters for the consolidation process.
According to the survey, 26% of Likud voters oppose the consolidation process with Israel Beiteinu. Of those opposed, 22% said they will not vote for the party in the upcoming elections.
Given that this will be, this is a decrease of nearly ten seats for Likud. So too there is opposition in Israel Beitenu of about 35% to the move, and some will not vote for HaLikud Beitenu.
The survey found that only 58% support the move.
Not just among voters: Some Likud members are organizing to oppose the union, towards the Likud conference convened on Monday. Leading the opposition is Minister Michael Eitan who declared an open confrontation to the union and said that, "The union with Lieberman is a mistake, will harm the Likud movement will not bring the results we are promised."
On the other hand, Arthur Finkelstein, the architect of the union between the parties, is sure of the justice of the move. "I estimate they will have 45 seats," he predicted in an interview with Channel 2 on Saturday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman met with Finkelstein the day before they announced the consolidation of their parties, and he recommended the Union. "It's been for years on my mind that it's a good move," he explained. "I'm talking about it for several years, since it apart they have a similar electorate and each contributes something to the other. And I think together they are much stronger."
According to him, by the union, the parties will have at least 45 seats. "Ultimately, the people who supported before the Likud and Yisrael Beiteinu would remain united. I also expect there to be 3-4 more seats to join this coalition, because it will a united right block.
"Such a block may attract more center-right people, especially those who went with Sharon and Kadima, I think it becomes more attractive, and this combination, it is expected that they will succeed very well, so in the end I think they will have 45 seats."
According to Finkelstein, the union is also good for the security of Israel: "I think that this is good politics and good governance, I think it's good for them, good for the country - and good for the Jews".
