Following a year of renovations – Statue of Liberty reopens

Statue of Liberty will reopen to the public on Sunday, the 126th anniversary of being posted on the New York coast.

The statue, a popular tourist site in New York, was closed for renovations since October last year. Renovation of the sculpture cost $30 million, and included replacing the steps to the crown, making them less steep. Today, after renovations, the statue has 393 steps, instead of 354.

Now, for the first time, even visitors with wheelchairs will be able to visit one of the observation decks at the top. National Park Service spokeswoman said that there is regulated access for wheelchairs, while preserving the historic structure.

The statue, a gift from France to the United - States, was dedicated on October 28, 1886, and came to symbolize the friendship between the two countries and their shared love of freedom.

About 3.5 million people visit the statue every year. Renovations will allow approximately -26,000 more people visit to visit the site annually.
