Did you manage to forget the struggle against the opening of the parking lot in Karta, Jerusalem on Shabbos? Here is you reminder, actually from the last day: President of the Jerusalem Magistrate Court, Shulamit Dotan, convicted Shimon Knipflemacher, a Hareidi protester against the opening of the parking lot, charged with rioting and assaulting a police officer under severe circumstances.
According to the indictment filed against Knipflemacher, on Motzaei Shabbos Parshas Ki Teze 5769, there was a routine demonstration against the opening of the parking lot on Shivtei Yisrael street in Jerusalem.
During the illegal demonstration stones and bottles were thrown at the police. Knipflemacher participated in throwing objects at the police.
The Jerusalem District Attorney's Office, based on the testimony of two undercover detectives claimed that the protester was identified by them and after lengthy surveillance was arrested.
Knipflemacherr himself has denied the allegations. He claimed that he lives close to the scene and when the demonstration took place, he was standing there with friends when suddenly policemen leapt at him, threw him to the ground, handcuffed him and arrested him for no reason. He also said that he went out onto the street, stood in one place near the Hachoma Hashlishit Street, to see the "action going on."
At the conclusion, the Court President stated that he is convicted of the crimes attributed to him and questioned the credibility of the defendant's version.
In the explanation she wrote: The version of the defense raises many questions and contradictions that a solution or a satisfactory explanation could not be found for. While the defendant testified that he was near his home at the intersection of Iddo Hanavi and Shivtei Yisrael streets because he likes to watch the activity performed during the demonstration and arrests, his friend testified that the social encounter between the defendant and his friends which was planned in advance, occurred, he said, in a "sterile" place where one can not even see the demonstration.
