A Palestinian official said tonight (Wednesday) to Reuters that Egypt is trying to promote contacts between Israel and Hamas, and managed to get commitments of both parties to calm the tension.

According to the source, following the Egyptian effort an official promise was made by Hamas to calm the tension. "Israel has said that it will calm the area and prevent attacks - unless the rocket barrages from Gaza continue" it was reported.

Overall, during the day 80 mortars and rockets were counted fired into Israel. Among others a Qassam rocket was fired from Gaza into Israeli territory and exploded in an open area, no damage was done and no one was injured.

In response the Israeli Air Force attacked the Gaza Strip three times, twice against rocket launchers and again against a terrorist target.

In Eshkol Regional Council, it was decided to open the schools tomorrow as usual, despite the barrage of rockets. Sapir College also announced this evening that lessons will be held tomorrow as usual.
