Hope: last Japan prisoner will be released within a few months

Israel's Supreme Court gave yesterday (Wednesday), the status of prisoner in Israel to Yaakov Yosef Greenwald, and the last prisoner in Japan.

Greenwald has spent four out of six years in prison imposed on him in Japan. A month and a half ago he was transferred to spend the rest of his sentence in Israel.

Greenwald arrived on 18th Elul accompanied by two Israeli wardens who accompanied him to Israel, and he is situated at the Nitzan prison.

Until yesterday he held the status of detainee which banned him from going on vacations and seeing guests and other benefits which other prisoners receive.

As explained by one of the activists who handled his case: "This is a known procedure of prisoners who come to Israel to serve their sentences, and only now can Greenwald take vacations and enjoy normal prisoner conditions.

"We tried to accelerate the processes of becoming a prisoner, but this is a very delicate situation that has implications for other prisoners serving sentences in other countries that Israel is trying to transfer them to continue serving their sentences in Israel.

"The Japanese are closely monitoring police conduct in the case of Greenwald, and insist that he spends the full period of the sentence imposed on him."
"We are now doing everything possible to transfer him to the Maasiyahu prison", it was told by the same source.

It should be noted that by deducting one third of his sentence for good behavior, Greenwald may be released in a few months.
