It was the target of the attack in Beirut: Lebanese security official, Wissam al-Hassan, is one of eight killed by a car bomb on Friday afternoon.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati expressed his intention today (Saturday) to resign. Demonstrations erupted in the country and residents are outraged, tomorrow a 'day of rage' is planned.
The senior, who served in the state intelligence apparatus, is considered identified with the anti-Syrian camp and a close friend of former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who is considered as a fierce opponent of Hezbollah and Syria. A few months ago he also led to the arrest of Michel Samaha, a Lebanese politician who supported the Syrian president's regime. After the arrest, he began to receive death threats and therefore moved his family to Paris.
The incident occurred as a result of an explosive device placed in a car near the city square Sassin, near the building of the General Secretariat of the 'March 14' camp – an anti-Syrian camp which opposes Hezbollah.
Following the assassination, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Miqati called a news conference where he told that he offered the president, Michel Suleiman, to resign, but at the request of the President he is freezing the decision to allow a discussion with members of the political groups in the country and for fear that Lebanon will be dragged into a civil war.
In the "March 14" Camp - the anti-Syrian camp in Lebanon, the Lebanese public was called for a gathering tomorrow at the "Freedom Square" in Beirut to participate in a 'Day of Wrath' against the "killers of Al - Hassan".
Since the bombing, civilians broke out in angry demonstrations throughout the country. According to various media reports in the country, demonstrators burned tires and set up checkpoints in the capital Beirut and elsewhere. The local radio reported that in the city of Tripoli even shots were heard.
Many in the state dealt with the question of who is responsible for the attack? Opposition activists suggested yesterday that the Syrian president's regime are behind the attack, "his murder is a strong blow to security to the country, the government and the Lebanese people. What happened today is something very serious, but no one could kill a whole nation."
The regime in Tehran decided to point a finger at Israel, and on its people claim that it is responsible for the attack. In a condemnation of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, the ministry spokesman said that "without doubt, the main enemy of the Lebanese people in the region is the Zionist regime, which gains from the instability and lack of security in the region."
