Former Mossad chief Meir Dagan, underwent surgery for a liver transplant in Belarus, and is hospitalized in intensive care unit. This was revealed yesterday by the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, at a press conference in his country.

A few months ago Dagan fell ill with a malignant disease and needed an urgent liver transplant.

He flew to a hospital in New York a few weeks ago, but he could not find a cure there. When he returned to Israel he told his associates that his condition is very bad, and then travelled for an emergency surgery in Belarus.

President Lukashenko said yesterday that Dagan was operated after doctors in the United States, Germany and Sweden refused to operate on him, because he is a former Mossad chief, but Israeli officials rejected the claims. Lukashenko added that he himself authorized the execution of the operation, due to the fact that this is such an important personality.

His family and associates managed to keep it a secret so far, and it remains unclear what the President's purpose was to reveal the surgery.
