A year after returning from captivity which lasted five and a half years in Gaza by Hamas, details of the interrogation of the soldier Gilad Shalit by the Islamist movement are revealed . Details of the investigation – which compose a story of heroism - are closely kept by the Israeli defense ministry.
According to a source familiar with the materials, "Shalit had a fear he had disclosed secrets to the Hamas," he said in a conversation with Walla News, "but very soon they explained to him that he did not disclose any secret and had acted very correctly."
The factor explained that Shalit did not offer information because he knew he could endanger state security. "I believe he is actually a hero for the way he made it through captivity," he added.
The investigation regarding Shalit's imprisonment started after tests proved that he is mentally fit for questioning, which reveals that he had not been tortured. "In one case Shalit described that during his first period of imprisonment they ordered him to be hung on a pole with his legs up in the air for a long time, while he suffered from his injury," the source said.
"Shalit passed his first two weeks of captivity under intensive investigations, but after two months they gradually faded when they saw Shalit is not 'delivering the goods'."
Shalit told investigators that from time to time people who looked like senior figures in Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip would come to his hiding place. "They asked mainly about politics and the trend in Israel," the source familiar with details of Shalit's investigation said. "Shalit was never really interested in Israeli politics, so he could not answer them."
According to the source, what made the investigation difficult is Shalit's nature. "The fact that he went on a hunger strike during captivity showed us that he did not create identification with his captors, that there was a crisis. The concern that they would try to bring him closer to them during the very long captivity, is automatically eliminated. The theory of double agent? Not serious. Whether it went through the minds of Hamas? I can not say. "
He added that Shalit "had demonstrated a great mental power. It was his mental strength that saved him while captive." According to him, "The international pressure for his release had not filtered into the system that held him captive, He was exposed to the radio and TV. At certain moments they used to change his channel when they did not like. He knew what was happening around him, but it did not affect him."
The interrogation which Gilad Shalit went through was defined by the Israeli defense experts as "childish, low in its professional level and without an effective aim." About the answers provided by Shalit to questions of the Israeli defense ministry, the source said that "Gilad Shalit filled all the pages which were given to him and answered all questions. There were no questions he could not answer. It is important to note that as a result of his capture it was not decided to change procedures or perform an examination of the doctrine on which investigators are based or in series of preparations for captivity.
