The Jewish community in Tuwer, in northern Russia, celebrated a century to the historic synagogue building in the city center and received ownership of the building from the local government

Russian government returned ownership of a historic synagogue

The city of Tuwer city, located in the north of Russia, is better known as a city which suffered from anti-Semitism over years, which included an attack on a synagogue, smashing of Jewish gravestones and more.

But this Sunday the community celebrated a century to the historic synagogue building in the city center, which is one of the oldest in Russia, and received ownership of the building from the local government.

The community in Tuwer had a revival last year, when it joined the Federation of Jewish Communities which is comprised of more than 500 Jewish communities in the CIS which are active throughout the year.

The moving event was graced by Russia's Rav, Hagr"b Lazar, who came especially from Moscow and was honored to give the central speech. In his words, the chief rabbi mentioned the importance of the synagogue in the daily life of every Jew, and the need to concentrate all the activities of Torah, education and Chessed for all the Jews of the city and county in it. He added and called upon the local Rav and community leaders, to increase activity and to sanctify the Name of Heaven.

The event featured the local Rav R.Y. Rosenzweig, the Rav of the Russian army R.A. Gurwitz, community leaders, the mayor and many dignitaries.

During the visit of the Chief Rabbi Lazar, he checked the kashrus of the local mikvah, and observed the activities of the Jewish Museum, the Jewish library, the Jewish Sunday school, humanitarian aid for the needy, and more.
