The ancient synagogue in the town of Milford, Connecticut - which is also considered as a historic site - burned down yesterday (Sunday) morning, and two Sifrei Torah in the ark were severely damaged. According to the local fire chief, the fire broke out following a shortcut in an electrical plug.

The community's Rav, Harav Shneur Wilhelm says that a passing policeman spotted the fire and called the fire department. He said the fire caused heavy damage to the synagogue, and two Torah scrolls in the Ark got wet by the water cannons of the fire fighters. It is not yet known if they could be used again.

Rabbi Wilhelm said that every Shabbos about 30 worshipers daven in the old synagogue and on the Yomim Noraim about a hundred people davened there.

The old Synagogue of Milford was established in 1926 - and is recognized as a historic site and as the oldest synagogue in Connecticut. Rabbi Schneur Wilhelm says that the synagogue was insured and in the near future they will start to renovate and rebuild it.

The area was popular with Jewish vacationers, and the synagogue was built by the Jewish community established there.
