Next week 7,200 orthodox students are expected to open the academic year, compared to 6,000 last year - an increase of 20 percent.
Although this is a small number of students relative to its population size, however it comes as a huge increase. According to Education Minister Gideon Sa'ar, within three years the number of ultra-Orthodox academy will increase to the number of 12,000 - twice as many as last year.
The minister will show this data of the ultra-Orthodox Academy at a government opening session of the year tomorrow.
The plan to increase access to ultra-Orthodox entrance into higher education will begin operating in the first 12 academic frameworks. Institutions with special frames will be established such as the Hebrew University, Technion, Bar Ilan University and Ariel University Center. Also, Hadassah College, Bezalel, Sami Shamoon, Ashkelon and Safed, College of Engineering, Holon Institute of Technology and Machon Lev.
Popular areas of study are: Software Engineering, Computer, Management, Paramedical areas and optometry.
The multi-year cost for this program is 180 million, which is supposed to help overcome the main barriers of entry of the ultra-Orthodox into the academy, as identified by the Council for Higher Education: Exit frameworks familiar – Yeshivas and Kollels - to a new system, knowledge gaps and habits of academic study, financial difficulties and adaptation to the characteristics of the competitive labor market.
The multi-year program principles are as close as possible between the orthodox framework and academic institution, without laying on too deterrent, academic and administrative responsibilities of an academic institution on one hand and finding the middle road between separation and integration.
