This coming Sunday municipal elections will take place in Belgium, during which residents will elect their mayors and council members, a personal election - in which residents choose any candidate in particular.
But this time, for the first time in Antwerp: Samuel Markowitz - who is one of the leaders of the 'Hatzalah' the city, will run for a slot in the city council.
Markowitz is on the Flemish liberal – democratic list. This list is the only one which is not considered extreme, and allows full religious freedom for the orthodox public, without any intervention in slaughter and circumcision laws.
Markowitz is in 15th place, and according to all the polls he will become a full-fledged member of the Council.
In an interview with B'Chadrei Charedim Markowitz says, "Up until now I have given of myself towards the community in my city. I was asked to enter politics, after consultation with my rabbanim - they told me to compete, and congratulated me and blessed me so I may merit in sanctifying Hashem's name.
"With God's help I hope that on Sunday the public will vote for me as the only orthodox candidate in Belgium."
