Psak of Hagry"s revealed: "Allowed to phone a relative on Yom Kippur"

President and founder of Yad Sarah, Uri Lopoliansky, revealed an interesting psak this week, which he got from Hagry"s Eliashiva ztk"l.

"We asked Harav Eliashiv zt"l what we should do when there's a call at the distress center on Shabbos, Yom Tov or even on Yom Kippur, and the person who called in is a dangerous situation and asks – or asked when he signed up for the service – to let a relative like his son or daughter, know.

"Harav zt"l answered that one should let the relative know, because by the fact that the relative will arrive, the patient will calm down and won't become perturbed. In addition, thereby the relative could make sure that he will receive better care and relate his specific problems and the medications he is taking. Of course, there is a non-Jew at the center who receives the call and informs the person."

Lopoliansky related this when he presented the technological improvements which were done at the revolutionary call center of Yad Sarah, which is activated according to all the meticulous requirements of halacha in light of the psakim of Hagry"s Eliashiv zt"kl, who even visited the center on its first days.

The free of charge center, to which one can call from any phone, supplies support for the elderly, sick and lonely – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, by means of devoted and trained professionals. On the screen in front of them appears the medical file of the subscriber and according to need, they will help in organizing the right help he needs at real time – either doctor, ambulance or police – or a listening human ear.

At Yad Sarah they mention that as a result of the sensitive security situation in Israel the level of anxiety has risen, and children of many elderly people have phoned excitedly to thank for the service, which instills security and emotional quiet in their parents' heart.
