A Chabbad chossid aged 51, resident of Crown Heights in Brooklyn, walked home on the second night of Rosh Hashanah a bit after midnight, when he heard a polite voice behind him say: "Excuse me, Mr.". He turned around, and to his amazement he saw a group of blacks behind him.
The incident – which is reported by the Chabbad site Shtorem.net – occurred on Leperts street, between Albany and Trevi avenues, a few meters from his home.
One of the group of aggressors pulled out a gun, while his friends demanded of the chossid all his money. He turned his pockets out explaining that it is now a holiday and he is not allowed to carry money on him, but his explanations were useless – and the aggressor shot. By miracle, a bullet didn't come out, but another aggressor gave him a strong blow in his face which made him fall to the ground.
A few Yeshiva bochurim who were across the road, noticed the attack and burst out shouting for help, what made the aggressors flee from the scene.
Police and Hatzala forces rushed to the scene. They took the victim to the hospital, where he was treated and released the next morning. Two policemen came to the hospital and wrote down the details of the attack, and promised to return after Rosh Hashana, on Wednesday. He is still awaiting them.
