Hagr"s Amar: the state of Israel – Atachalta De'geulah

M.K. Atniel Shneler, who was one of the initiators of "Law of Referendum", is initiating at the end of 7 years of the "Hitnatkut" (retreat from Gush Katif) plan – an educational program which will deal with the halachic meaning of "referendum" and the obligation to abide by it according to halacha.

The Herzog College, led by Yesodot organization, was recruited to the mission and are these days developing the program which is meant for teachers of citizenship in the upper grades.

As part of the program, the Chief Sephardi Rabbi, Harav S. Amar, gave a filmed lesson: "Acharei rabim lehatot – halacha le'maase".

In his answers to the questions of Harav Yaakov Medan, Rosh Yeshiva of Har Etzion and the chairman of Yesodot, Harav Amar strengthened the blessed initiative and presented the halachic reasons which support the issue of referendum.

Harav Amar: "In our day and age, since prophecy no longer exists, the Sanhedrin were chosen by a majority, the heads of the town were chosen with a majority, and the ordinances of the community were chosen by majority. So too in the state of Israel, Atchalta de'Geula, the government and Knesset are chosen by the majority. When the government differs regarding crucial matters – one has to turn to the public, and with Siata Dishmaya – the truth comes to light by means of a referendum".

M.K. Shneler, the initiator of the program, said that "A referendum is the expression of the will of the nation which will ensure the unity of society and the wholesomeness of the nation".
