Last night (Tues.) a little after 3:00am, the military police raided the city of Bnei Brak and carried out arrests on young Yeshiva students who did not show up over the last six months at the recruit center with a form from the institution at which they are learning, to regulate their standing as Yeshiva students.
From information which reached Behadrey Hareidim it seems that there are at least five youngsters, mostly single, aged 20-25 who in the past gave in forms to regulate their postponement of service in the IDF in the framework of "Toratam Umanutam".
The families of the detainees told Behadrey Haredim that since the arrest – close to 3 am, not one of those arrested has made contact.
12 hours later, one of the detainees phoned his parents, and updated them that he is being brought together with the other detainees to the military court at Tel Hashomer base, where it will be decided whether to prolong their arrest.
This is a precedent, for since the Tal Law has been annulled, thousands of yeshiva bochurim have stayed without a law which regulates their refraining from enlistment to the IDF, but despite this fact the military police did not perform arrests besides one case of Devorah Leah Cohen, a Chabbad woman from Kiryat Malachi, who was defined as a defector from the IDF after she did not organize her exemption on the claim of religion, as is normally done. This morning, she was sentenced to 50 days of jail, when in reality she has 36 days to serve in the military jail.
Will the Yeshiva bochurim and avreichim who are supposed to hand in postponement forms, but because of the cancellation of the Tal Law did not do so, be arrested as well? It seems not. The government and military jails are rather full, and there is no room in them to house hundreds and thousands of yeshiva and kollel students.
It is no secret that the military system is not interested in recruiting the thousands of hareidi youngsters, and there are many in the secular public who declared outright that there is no use in it. It is only left for us to hope that this is not an attempt on behalf of a certain factor to incite and make headlines.
An IDF spokesman responded to Behadrey Haredim that "The IDF acts regularly to enforce the phenomenon of defection from the general public throughout the year.
"The arrest procedures are initiated by the Israeli police, the military police and the border control of the State of Israel".
