Building collapsed in Geulah. Video, pictures and interviews.

Close to 11:30am a call was received about a part of a building which collapsed on 13 Malchei Yisrael street in Geula, Jerusalem.

An entire storey collapsed with its tiled roof.

A heap of stones fell onto the sidewalk and rose high, and there was danger of people trapped underneath it.

Tens of Ichud Hatzala, Zaka, teams of Hatzala and MDA were on the scene, and one casualty was evacuated in a light condition. In addition, a fireman was slightly injured and 2 workers were rescued unharmed.
Nine teams of firemen arrived, rescuers from the Civil Comman units were also called in.

The mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, arrived on the scene to follow from up close.
It was reported from the Jerusalem police that 2 people were injured, one in a light to medium condition, and the second in a light condition. The two are workers who were working at the place. The searches continued by the firemen and the Jerusalem municipality. There were thousands of curious onlookers who made it difficult for the rescue forces to work. The work manager was detained for investigation.

Hezi Roth, an Ichud Hatzala paramedic, related: "I arrived from my work place which is close to the incident, and citizens told me that the wall of the building collapsed slowly and spilled onto the road and sidewalk. It is still not sure if there are people trapped inside the restaurant or below the heap of stones. I and other paramedics of Ichud Hatzala gave first aid to a casualty with a slight to medium condition, who was evacuated to hospital. Tens of Ichud Hatzala paramedics, forces of firemen and police are on the scene".

The MDA spokesman, Zachi Heller, said that at 11:31 MDA of the Jerusalem district received a call about the collapse of a section of a building which is being renovated on 13 Malchei Yisrael street in Jerusalem. "MDA paramedics are searching after casualties at the place, at this stage 1 casualty has been located with a suspicion to a leg lesion, he is evacuated by an MDA ambulance to the Sha'arei Tzedek hospital. There could be others trapped".

At the end of the incident, after firemen with the help of a tractor of a contractor who was working on the street evacuated all the ruins and ruled out the presence of more trapped, a decision was received by engineers of the Jerusalem municipality and the Civil Command to destroy the entire building to the ground, since the building has been declared as dangerous and might harm citizens on the street and destabilize the stability of buildings close to it.
