Terror attack in Burges: searches after American collaborator

The media in Bulgaria reported yesterday (Sunday) that the terrorist who performed the attack in Burges, in which five Israelis and two locals, was helped by another man who stayed in Verna over the last few days.

According to the report, the collaborator of the terrorist who exploded in the Israelis' tourist bus in Burges, is a man holding an American passport who answered to the name of David Jeffson, and the police has lost his tracks. The driving license from Michigan which he held was on the name of Jacques Philippe Martin from Louisiana, USA.

The suspect stayed in a hotel close to the congress center in the beach city of Verna, Bulgaria over the days preceding the attack, and was documented in security cameras at the Verna airport at the end of June.

The Bulgarian police estimates that he is still in the area of Bulgaria. At this stage, the investigators are working to locate him by means of an identikit which was disseminated at the end of last week in all the hotels in the city.

In parallel, there is a suspicion that the attacker did not realize at all that he is about to explode, and Jeffson who is suspected as collaborator is the one who activated the explosive which the terrorist carried on his body, by remote control.
It also stems from the investigation, that the terrorist arrived at the airport of Burges before the attack in order to study the area. A day before the attack, he tried to rent a car, but his request was refused because of suspicion regarding the picture on the driving license.

The Bulgarian Minister of Interior, Zvatan Zvatanov, protested against the definition of his country as an "easy goal" by the media in Israel, and said that the terrorist is not a citizen of Bulgaria, and there is a suspicion that he is a Swedish citizen, who was previously arrested in Guantanamo. He further said that the explosive which the terrorist carried on his body weighed 3kg of explosives. According to a report in the media, it is possible that there were two explosives, one on the body of the terrorist, and a second weighing 10kg in the boot of the bus.

Attempts are made to identify the suicidal terrorist with certainty.

From closed-circle television films which were documented before the explosion, a man with long white hair was seen, but an eye witness said on Friday that the suspect was a dark skinned man, with short brown hair, an Arab accent and it seemed that he was wearing a wig. A taxi driver who took the terrorist was investigated, and his testimony was compared with another testimony of the car agency owner, but it is still unclear whether the terrorist talked with an Arab accent. It was further reported that he carried a large amount of money in 500 Euro notes.

The FBI and CIA investigators are working together with Bulgarian investigators, who are scanning finger prints and DNA samples which were taken from the terrorist's body.
