In a rare expression, Minister Benny Begin expressed his view about the Jewishness of the first Hebrew city, and caused a storm. "How many tons of Gefilte Fish does one have to eat in Tel Aviv for it to be Jewish?". Listen

Begin: "Tel Aviv is that a Jewish city?"

In a recording which reached the hands of "Mekor Rishon" writer, Ze'ev Kam, and which is published today (Thursday), Minister Benny Begin is heard sharply attacking the city of Tel Aviv, which according to him is not a Jewish city.

Begin said the things about a week and a half ago, during a meeting which was held in the Hartman Institute and which dealt with the question of the definition of Israel as a Jewish state. A recording from that meeting was leaked, and is presented to you.

Begin described the ideal situation to his mind of a Jewish state, and in order to illustrate it, took the situation of the city of Tel Aviv as a living example.

Listen to his words:

"At times I asked people," he said, "Is Tel Aviv a Jewish city? How many tons of Gefilte Fish does one have to eat in Tel Aviv in order for it to still be Jewish? I happened to be in Tel Aviv over Chol Hamoed Pesach over a year ago. I'm telling you, I was rather amazed. Chometz, and Chometz, and Chometz and Chometz. Is it Jewish? Is it Jewish?"

Later on in his words, Begin explained that to his mind the correct and objective way of defining the term "A Jewish state" is not in the religious meaning, but in the following way: "It is the national state of the Jewish people. That's it. There is no other national Jewish state. Not in Uganda, and not in Argentina, like the Baron Hirsch perhaps thought for a minute. It is here. It's in our land. It's in Eretz Yisrael".
