This morning (Sunday) a new law was presented from the Knesset. The law states that youngsters under the age of 18 are not legally allowed to marry. The law up until now was 17.
The ministers who voted pro the law are Daniel Hershkowitz, Benny Begin, Don Maridor, Orit Nokad and Yaakov Neeman. The only minister against this new law was Meshulam Nahari from Shas.
A representative from the law office explains their reasoning “at the age of 18 you are of legal capacity and because marriage is legal it should only be allowed from the age of 18.” He added that exceptions can be made over the age of 16 in certain situations.
There is a concern that the marriage of minors is detrimental to ‘minors’ rights and free consent to marriage’, and that there may be a lot of pressure from her husband, family and surroundings. In this case the marriage is forced and not out of free will.
The ministers further explain that the research results all point to the divorce rates of those who married early, as well as family members disappearing and financial hardships.
Nahari asks- why does this even need a law?
Another personal who is against this law states that the result of this law will be many children who have just one parent.
