Former MK makes surprising statements: Sharon Gal, former MK of the right wing ‘Yisrael Beiteynu’ party, who recently joined the ‘Big brother’ reality show on Israel’s’ channel 2 TV, made some surprising statements against drafting Chareidim to the army.
“Part of our existence here in the state of Israel is in the merit of the lomdei Torah, therefore I would not want to draft all the Chareidim to the army” said Gal, replying to a question he was asked on the show.
The comments were made during a heated discussion that was taking place last week in the ‘Big Brother House’ about Zionism and racism in Israel. During the course of the conversation an argument erupted regarding the contribution of the Chareidi and levavdil, Arab sectors to the state.
Sharon Gal told one of the contestants, Shem Bardugo: “While the Arabs get ‘Bituach Leumi’ (National Insurance) they should do national service”.
Bardugo replied: “So I want the Chareidim to serve in the army, just as you want the Arabs to do national service”.
Surprisingly, Gal answered Bardugo: “Since we are the only Jewish state in the world, part of our existence here, is in the merit of the lomdei Torah. Therefore, I would not want to draft all of the Chareidm to the army, rather, only whoever is not learning Torah. Do not compare the Arabs to the Chareidm it’s not the same thing. The Arabs don’t learn Torah”.
Taken a bit back by Gals answer, Bardugo retorted: The Arabs pay taxes, the Chareidim don’t.
Not flinching, Gal bravely answered: Who told you that?! You are making a generalization. You have been brainwashed for years that the Chareidim are your enemy”.
Worth noting: These statements expressed by a former MK from the ‘Yisrael Beiteynu’ party are not in sync with the party’s leader, Avigdor Liebermn, who just recently stated that if it was up to him he would forcefully draft all Chareidim, either to the army or to national service.
Defense Minister Lieberman stated two months ago, “If I would have enough mandates, I would pass a legislation mandating every 18-year-old, to either enlist in the army or do national service”
