Minister of culture and sport Miri Regev, sent an urgent letter this morning to the Mayor of Yerushalayim, Nir Barkat, requesting of him to personally intervene and block the scheduled lecture by Yuli Novak, ‘CEO of the NGO ‘Breaking Silence’.

The lecture is scheduled to take place tomorrow at the ‘Swan Gallery’ event in Yerushalayim. The topic for tomorrows talk is “the effect and involvement of settlers on the IDF operating in the territories”.

In her letter, Minister Regev writes, “the organization of ‘Breaking Silence’ operates to tarnish Israel’s image around the world, and portrays it as un-ethical, which damages the IDF’s ability to operate”.

Regev based her request on Yerushalayim’s attorney general, who stated that these kinds of events are not meant for topics such as what Yuli Novak has in mind.

“I expect that you will instruct the relevant municipality officials to prevent the planned speech, as per the guidelines of the attorney general”. Regev wrote in her letter to Barkat.

She further added, “due to the short amount of time, I am asking for your personal urgent intervention”.

The ‘Swan Gallery’ operates as part of the “Bar-Kayoma” foundation, and is funded by the Yerushalayim ministry of culture.

“Bechadrei Chareidm” previously reported that Chareidi residents who live in the area have long been opposing and fighting the ‘Swan Gallery’, which they claim is held at the expense of their children getting proper learning facilities.
