Surprisingly, Shelly Yachimovitz a left-wing MK is joining calls to pardon Elor Azaryah; the soldier who shot an Arab terrorist in Chevron, and was charged today (Wednesady) with manslaughter. She is joining the Many MK’s, including Minister of Culture, Miri Regev and Minister of education Naftali Bennet that have called for the soldiers pardoning.
Commenting on the case MK Yachimovitz said “although the court acted in a professional manor and operated based on evidence and testimonies, after the verdict is handed down Elor should be pardoned.
Just as in the kav 300 incident, where the Shabak (GSS) agents were pardoned” said Yachimovitz, referring to the kavv 300 incident, where terrorists hijacked a bus with 41 passengers en route to Ashkelon. After a long standoff with security forces, the Sayeret Matkal, an advanced commando unit in the IDF, stormed the bus and released the hostages. Two out of the four terrorists were captured alive and were subsequently executed, on orders from Avraham Shalom, chief of the shin bet at the time. After a public outcry of the executions, Shalom was convicted and immediately pardoned.
“I intend to work on getting a pardon for Elor Azaryah”, Said Miri Regev, voicing strong support for the soldier. “This is not how we act towards our own soldier”. According to Regev “this is a trial that wasn’t supposed to happen”. An incident where a terrorist is killed by an IDF soldier should not make it to the criminal sector. If Elor breached the rules of procedures, then all he should have had is a hearing by his brigade commander”.
She added, “when a soldier is assumed guilty even before his trial and is totally abandoned-it sends a message to new recruits that if something happens you are on your own”.
